Driving etiquette   PDF
Written by Wei-Jing Zhu
Growing up in the US and learning to drive during teenage years allowed me to learn many socially implicit driving etiquettes during my high school and college years, as well as getting tips from my NY-taxi-driving uncle. Since these are never written down, I will share them with many oversea scholars who may not know these tricks of the road.
Driving Tips in the real world
  • When someone blinks/flashes their high-beam on you once: either you forgot to turn your lights on, you left your high beam on, or offering you the chance to make a left turn in front of you, or to let you in to the main road if you are signalling to get in.
  • When someone flashes their high-beam on you several times quickly: you will soon see a policecar in ambush ahead of you, or other dangerous situation, so slow down (because they have been coming from the opposite direction, they foresaw your imminent danger.)
  • When driving in the city, (lesson from a taxi uncle), if people honk at you while you make a move, the honk both expresses their anger, yet simultaneously and effectively indicated their awareness of your attempt. This is important information for your judgement.
  • Driving in pairs: If you want to follow me in traffic, then if I want both of us to change to the right lane, I would signal first, but not change, and wait for you to change lanes behind me, then I would change to the right with your protection behind.

Imagine if we don't do this: I signal to right, and change lanes before you do. Then before you have the chance to change lanes, someone behind you may be so fast as to attempt to overtake you on the right, and change into the right lane, and preventing you from changing into it. Then we are at a dilemma: should I drive fast? should you drive fast? The situation will be confusing.

  • More driving in pairs: whenever in double, drive slowly and encourage others to pass, so as to open up possibilities for fast traffic behind us to speed past us, either on the left or on the right, so that the road will be opened up for our two cars to reconfigure.
