Phonemic Awareness   PDF
Written by Wei-Jing Zhu
Some notes from a Teachers Presentation on Phonemic Awareness for pre-school children development.

Phonemic Awareness:
  1. rhythm + rhyme: Mother Goose, rhyme, aliteration, have child clap at the rhyme
  2. part of a word: you give the parts, they combine.  (RER - AT) -> RAT
  3. sequence of sound: s in sun
  4. separation of sound: break up the sound (difficult):  L | A | M | P
  5. manipulation of sound:  MAP -> TAP,  FAT -> AT
Develop Aural, rather than (and before) Print.
Distinct from Phonics: involve letters, word family

Research in P.A.
  • enhance reading ability
  • success thru 12th grade
  • more than IQ, listening comprehension
  • PA is prerequisite and consequence of learning to read

Practice:
  • children can't handle too many options
  • use arms (kinesthetics), tab on table
  • I-spy games (I spy somthing in the room that start with RER)
