Some notes from a Teachers Presentation on Phonemic Awareness for pre-school children development.
Phonemic Awareness:
- rhythm + rhyme: Mother Goose, rhyme, aliteration, have child clap at the rhyme
- part of a word: you give the parts, they combine. (RER - AT) -> RAT
- sequence of sound: s in sun
- separation of sound: break up the sound (difficult): L | A | M | P
- manipulation of sound: MAP -> TAP, FAT -> AT
Develop Aural, rather than (and before) Print. Distinct from Phonics: involve letters, word family
Research in P.A.
- enhance reading ability
- success thru 12th grade
- more than IQ, listening comprehension
- PA is prerequisite and consequence of learning to read
Practice:
- children can't handle too many options
- use arms (kinesthetics), tab on table
- I-spy games (I spy somthing in the room that start with RER)
